Communication Arts--Mrs. Murray, Ms. Love, Ms. Armstrong
We are excited to start the new year with your student!! We will begin with Wonders this year.  It is a very interactive curriculum.  Students will have the opportunity to use this curriculum online at home.  We will be reading for homework every night.  Our current goal is to read at least 20 minutes a night and record this in their planner.  Students will have an opportunity to create book recommendation selfies when they finish their books.  They will also record finished books on their reading logs in their composition books.  We will have a great year with lots of new and exciting content.  Please don’t hesitate to come into the classroom.

The letter below is from the Home Connect portion of Wonders!!

Dear Family Member: Welcome! This year your child will be building important reading skills. You can help your child practice reading skills taught at school. By working together, you and your child can become partners in learning. Each week your child will bring home: • A letter for you that describes what the class is working on that week. • A list of the week’s vocabulary words and spelling words. • A comprehension activity for you and your child to work on together. Reading is key to improving learning in all other subject areas. With that in mind, here are a few questions you may want to ask me when we meet: • How is my child progressing in reading? • Which area is my child’s strongest? Which is the weakest? • How can I help my child’s reading improve? Your interest, praise, and encouragement are sure to lead to your child’s success in school. Here’s to an exciting year of learning!

We look forward to seeing and working with you and your family.
Ms. Murray and Mrs. Armstrong

Math--Mrs. Lucht, Ms. Love, Ms. Armstrong
Dear Parents, Welcome to 5th Grade Math and Co-teachers Mrs. Lucht and Mrs. Armstrong.  We feel privileged to teach your child math content this year.  Your textbook, Go Math, is available online and is a great resource to help your child succeed at math this year. There will be other opportunities for your child to get extra support in math.  Math Club will be meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 7:25 a.m. We eat donuts and do math.  I would appreciate any parents who can help provide donuts. There will be other math teachers offering before and after school help.  We will share this information as soon as it is available.  October 30 will be Pumpkin Math where the students all bring a pumpkin and we do math activities with it for their math period.  Parents will be needed to help make this day be successful.  Let me know if you are available.  Your child’s assignments will be published online daily and will also be copied into their planners. These are great resources to know what your child did in math and what homework they will be doing.  Please feel free to call the school and talk to us about any questions or concerns.  We look forward to working with you for the year 2015, 2016. Sincerely, Mrs. Lucht and Mrs. Armstrong

Social Studies -
I am so excited to be teaching Science and Social Studies this year!  We will be dividing the year between Science and Social Studies by focusing on one subject at a time.  We will begin our year discovering where we are in the world by working with maps.  We will talk about why we need maps, how maps change, and how to read maps of the United States and the World.  Some of our time will be spent learning about how our building and our classroom works.  We will practice procedures and even learn a few lessons from the super heroes.  My goal for my students is to make history come alive by letting them experience it as much as possible instead of just reading about it.  I look forward to an exciting year of learning with my students!

We will be finishing the Gates test on April 15.  After this, we will begin our review before MAP testing.  My two favorite days of the year are incorporating song with figurative language.  We will be doing this on Wednesday and Thursday (April 16/17).  After MAP testing, we will continue to work on Treasures and we have a layered curriculum unit called “Fantastic Foods”.  I will be sending home an email after MAP week and will also send a Unit sheet that has all of the requirements in advance.  This is my favorite week for Treasures.  We will end the year with creating our memory books.  This year we will use book creator to do so.  Thank you so much for all of your support this year.  I have appreciated all of the kindness!!!
Becky Murray

Math--Mrs. Lucht, Ms. Love, Mrs. Dyer
Parents, I cannot believe how quickly this year is slipping by,  Its been a privilege to have your students in my math
class.  We are just now finishing a unit on measurement and will begin a unit on geometry on Monday.  Please
let your students play math games on their commuter for math facts, adding and subtracting fractions, long
division, etc.  Cool Math 4 Kids is a great site.  This would be a fabulous review for the
Map Test.  We have some amazing mathematicians in this fifth grade.  Please encourage your child to come
to math club on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 7:25a.m.  Also, there is homework club after school
on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m.  We are sending a math packet challenge for spring
break for the kids to complete.  The ones who complete will get an electronics party to be announced.

Have a great spring break and Easter!!  Sincerely, Joy Lucht

Communication Arts--Mrs. Murray, Ms. Love, Mrs. Dyer
We will be taking our Unit 2 assessment on Wednesday, February 19, 2014-Friday, February 21, 2014.  This assessment is being spread out over the days because it is very long.  It however is very good practice for the up and coming MAP testing.  We will be working on a common writing assessment on Monday, February 24 and 25, 2014.  The students will be getting the same writing prompt.  Communication Arts teachers on both teams will be collaboratively grading these.  We still need to work on reading every night and recording on the students’ reading logs.  This is beneficial for the students to read every night.  We have been working on writing reviews on books, movies, and television shows.  The students will also be required to complete a book review this quarter on a book they are reading.  I have also thrown out a weekly challenge that if the students read ⅘ nights this week, and record it, they will earn a “treat” on Friday.  Again thank you for being so supportive for your student.  We greatly appreciate it at school.  I also wanted to extend that I have a small group that meets on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3:20-4:15.  We work on reading strategies, catch up on small projects, and work on comprehension.  If you would like your student to attend, please let me know either via email or call.  This way I know who I am looking for after school.  Thanks so much.  Rebecca Murray

Math--Mrs. Lucht, Ms. Love, Mrs. Dyer
We are studying fractions big time right now.  We are learning how to simplify or reduce fractions, add and
subtract fractions, and apply fractions to the real world.  We are also doing a performance event called
Fractions with Pizza-zzzz.  This is a real world fractions using pizzas.  We use numbers, words, and pictures to
solve our problems.  We are also doing a 5th grade math review booklet together in class.  This is so helpful to the
students to see what they need to make sure they have mastered.  Please remember that there is math club on
Tuesday and Wednesday morning at 7:25 a.m.-7:55 a.m. Also, there is study buddies on Wednesday night from
3:30-4:30 p.m.  Please take advantage of this extra help for math!!  Please let me know how I can help your child
better succeed.  Thanks for all your support!  Mrs. Lucht

Science-Social Studies--Mr. Haight, Ms. Love, Mrs. Dyer
Science - We are finishing up body systems.  This week we will look at the digestive system.  There will be a study guide filled out Monday for a test on Wednesday or Thursday.

Social Studies - We are finishing up our layered curriculum on Colonial America.  We should be finished by the middle or next week.  After that we will look at the events that led to the Revolutionary War.
